10 BONA FIDE Items- Hiking in Broken Bow, OK

Hiking around Broken Bow can be amazing experience!

Hiking can be one of the most memorable things you do while you’re camping or RVing near Beavers Bend State Park in Broken Bow, OK. But no matter how experienced you are, if you’re not prepared, you may find yourself in a sticky situation.

When you’re making up your packing lists, make sure to take these 10 things under consideration before you hit the trail.

1. State Park Map

You can find TONS if info on hiking trails, activities and more by visiting the Beavers Bend Travel Oklahoma page HERE. Most importantly though, a trail map will ensure you stay in the right areas.

2. A Hiking Buddy

Do you have your exit buddy!!??

Hiking with another person is always recommended as you’ll always have someone to help you get out of danger should the need arise. If you are determined to hike alone, at least reach out to someone to let them know where you plan on hiking and the date/time you plan to leave and return.

3. Food and Water

One liter of water per five miles of hiking. Bring more based on difficulty, heat, etc.

Depending on the length of your hike, it’s important to bring enough to sustain you during your outing. We recommend you bring a liter of water for every 5 miles worth of planned hiking if you can’t source it from nature. A few snacks like crackers or dried fruit make for a quick energy boost. Just make sure you pack out your trash.

4. Compass/Navigation Tools

Never. Eat. Sour. Watermelon.

While your handy dandy smart phone may give you a blue line to follow in the big city, your cell service may be limited when you’re out hiking. Even if you have good reception, consider bringing a compass and try to navigate your way through using your skills as an adventurer in lieu of Siri.

5. First Aid Kit

Never hike any reasonable distance without at least a basic first aid kit.

From booboos and scrapes to major injuries, having access to quick aide can be critical. When you’re in nature, there is always a chance to need band-aids and antibiotic ointment. This kit from REI has everything you will need for your hike.

6. Sun Protection

Wide Brimmed Hats Offer Great Sun Protection

Even if you’re hiking in cloudy conditions or in the dense woods around Broken Bow Lake, it’s important to wear some sort of UV protective gear or sunscreen. A wide brimmed hat may not be the most fashionable option, but it sure does save your skin…literally. Also, long sleeve, lightweight hooded shirts like the Samuri Hoodie Shirt from AFTCO make all the difference!

7. Good Hiking Shoes

See–Hiking boots can make for great IG photos too!

Look, we get it. Your Instagram photos just aren’t the same if you’re not sporting your cutest kicks. If you’re that set on the photo-op being perfect, put on your rugged hiking boots and stick the sneakers in the backpack until the time is right. The truth is, if you don’t wear proper foot gear, you run the risk of serious injury.

8. Weather Appropriate Clothes

It doesn’t have to be flannel, but you get the picture…

It may be sunny and warm in Florida, but Broken Bow may be 40-degrees. A good ole pair of blue jeans typically does the trick unless the weather is either very hot or very cold. The key word for the cold is ‘layers’. As the day warms up, you’ll want to be able to shed layers. Conversely, if it’s going to be warm, cool, breathable clothing is a must to keep you from overheating.

9. Backpack

There are a lot of great options no matter your skill level

Your packing list is getting pretty long and you need a place to keep all of these important items. A comfortable backpack helps keep your back from hurting the whole time. We suggest one like the Osprey Talon 22 among others.

10. Knife

THAT’s a knife…

A good motto is “Expect the best—Prepare for the worst”. A knife can be used in foraging, food prep, and in some very rare situations, self-defense. Ultimately, you never know what you might end up using it for, but you can bet that you won’t have it when you need it if you don’t pack it to begin with.

There are amazing opportunities to experience the Great Outdoors all over the country. If you’re considering making a trip to Broken Bow or Beavers Bend State Park to hike, we know if you prepare appropriately, you’ll make lasting memories for years to come!
