Friends Trail Loop
Length: 1.5 miles
Suggested Age Minimum: 3+
Difficulty Rating: 5/10
A good family-style trail has enough challenge that you get a good workout in, but it’s gentle enough that the kids can enjoy it too without having to be carried (at least not the whole time!) Friends Trail Loop fits the bill. The first leg has you walking up a relatively steep, well defined walking path followed by a descent down to the river’s edge where you can enjoy fly fishing, wading/swimming, picnicking on the large flat boulders and more before heading back to the parking lot.
Skyline Trail
Length: 9.5 miles
Suggested Age Minimum: 13+
Difficulty Rating: 9/10
If you want a little more challenging trail, check out Skyline Trail. It has many steep climbs and some potentially hazardous water crossings, so plan accordingly. Skyline is not ideal for children or pets. The rewards of the hike are the numerous river overlooks and dense mature forests. It is relatively well marked but may require some creativity when you’re scaling up and down some of the hillsides.
Lakeview Lodge Trail
Length: 3.5 miles
Suggested Age Minimum: 8+
Difficulty Rating: 6/10
You may have to plan to park offsite and hike in, but this trail is worth it! This gorgeous trail follows along the banks of the upper end of Broken Bow Lake. Pack in a fishing pole and a sack lunch and enjoy the beautiful sights. If you are a mushroom hunter, many unique and rare mushrooms are found here including the occasional Lion’s Mane, but make sure you don’t pick anything you find as this is a State Park.
If you live anywhere within a day’s drive from Broken Bow, OK, you should consider adding this gem to your short list of outdoor excursions. Between the beauty of the surrounding nature and the memories made, you can all but guarantee it will be well worth the trip.
